Differentiation, Stretching, and Learning Support

Pedagogically, the NORMAL CURVE phenomenon occurs in the classroom, where around 80% of students are in the middle zone of the normal curve, ie students who have an average level of speed in capturing and understanding the subject matter. This group of students is the target of teaching in each session. However, there are also around 10% of students in the extreme right zone of the curve, whose ability to absorb the learning material is above average, exceeding the speed of the students in the middle section. On the other hand, there are also about 10% of students who are in the extreme left zone of the normal curve, who are slower learners. If the fast learning students are not well-empowered, they will usually be frustrated and mischievous, because they feel so easy to understand the subject matter. In SGS, teachers are required to prepare extra work which is more challenging but still within the same topic range to be given to fast learners. Besides that, the teacher can also provide different, more challenging tasking or assignments to continue to accommodate fast learning students' learning adventures. Likewise, students who are in the extreme left zone of the normal curve, ie students with slower learning speed, will be frustrated if forced to understand the teaching material as students in the two previous zones. Hence, slower students will be given proper learning supports, either by classroom teachers or teaching assistants or designated staff, so that they will not be left behind. In SGS, each learning session must be made effective and fully fruitful to the students and each student is required to use his/her time efficiently and productively – there shouldn’t be time wasted.

Extra Lessons

In SGS we are very demanding of our students. We expect our teachers to be fully committed to making each of our students fully understand the lesson from the class, not from a tutor at home or by the help of their parents. That is why SGS is one of the very few schools in Indonesia guaranting that its students do not need tutoring or extra lessons at home in order to fully understand the lessons, with a note that these students are not students with special needs. However, we learned that there were parents who had specific targets for their children and for this reason SGS has collaborated with several educational institutions to accommodate the needs of students and parents while providing positive off-school activities to fortify students from increasingly alarming gadget penetration.
